GARDENS BIRCH CARVED SPOON 9
$26.00
These beautiful wooden utensils are the result of an incredible effort by two brothers. Wells Moore, a local Gardens champion, gathers the wood from the trees we trim, then ships it to Vashon Island, Washington, where his brother, John Moore, crafts these utensils before sending them back for us to sell. John, now retired from the military, is well-known for his carvings in the Pacific Northwest. He committed himself to learning this skill after meeting an important regional woodcarver while stationed in the South. John was immediately drawn by the possibilities of woodworking by hand.

· This spoon is carved from “second chance” white birch or Betula papyrifera, gathered sustainably here at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens during forest-maintenance

· Notice the attention John pays to the figures in the wood, even though this species to known be almost without visible grain

· Large Spoon, 13.25 x 1.75 inches

· Hand-oiled, food-safe finish: replenish annually with food-grade oil (walnut or flaxseed)

· Handmade in Washington

Your purchase is powerful. Not only does it help to sustain local artisans and preserve traditional arts and crafts, but it directly supports horticulture, research, and educational programming at the Gardens.
